There are so many different careers in the field of music! My recommendation is to explore a few, and try to find the intersection between your passion and talents - that's where you'll be the most successful.
For example, if you love playing music, the next questions I would ask are whether you love performing, writing, or recording as well. Each of those have different potential paths. Similarly, if you love the business side of music, I would ask whether you like the idea of talent management, marketing, or music technology.
There are SO MANY potential paths. You don't have to choose just one because life will take you in unexpected directions, but finding something that you love AND that you're good at is a great next step.
Of course, there are other considerations to your career besides passion. Each of the above careers have very different earning potentials, lifestyles, working conditions, access to benefits, etc. These are important, but I still think finding the intersection between your passion and talent is the first thing to do :)
For example, if you love playing music, the next questions I would ask are whether you love performing, writing, or recording as well. Each of those have different potential paths. Similarly, if you love the business side of music, I would ask whether you like the idea of talent management, marketing, or music technology.

It's exciting to think about a music career and I think that I can provide an effective path for you about it, but your journey will be unique and totally up to you. Your first step is when inquiring about this, state whether you are thinking about becoming a musician or a singer. Once you establish that, there are some things you can do while still in high school with no experience yet.
In high school, you will need to be involved in either Chorus, Choir or Band or Orchestra, depending on what you want to do. Be involved throughout your high school years. Connecting with these programs at your school will give you practice and possibly opportunities to perform. You will need all the the experience you can get, so now is a great time to begin.
After high school, I highly recommend attending college for a Bachelors Degree in Music. Here is where you will learn a lot as well as have opportunities to perform. Having the degree will open some doors later on, but will give you the opportunity to network around the industry and learn all the technical aspects of being a musician or a singer. It's well worth it.
Once you graduate with your Bachelors in Music, the industry and how to get work will not be a mystery to you anymore. It's definitely not something to jump into before you are trained and have experience performing for audiences. You will learn the ins and outs through your college path.
You will get work by finding project notices in the music industry trade papers, Billboard, for one has notices like this so when you are ready with experience or even if you're curious now, start a subscription to Billboard Magazine/ Newspaper/Website. Your college path will familiarize you with other trade papers/websites and other ways to get work. It's all a process and needs to be given careful preparation.
So, decide if you are thinking about being a singer or a musician, make strong connections with Music activities in high school and consider going to college as a Music Major. That would be my basic and generalized advice for any young person thinking about the Music Industry.
