Here are three steps to help you stand out in sports medicine:
- Start Gaining Patient-Contact Hours Early: If you're interested in Sports Medicine, it's important to gather non-academic care hours. Look for student aide roles in Athletic Training on campus or aide positions in Orthopedic or PT clinics. These roles offer real sideline and clinical experience, which is more valuable than general fitness internships.
- Get Hands-On with Lab Equipment: Go beyond just attending Exercise Physiology classes. Ask your professors if you can help set up lab equipment. Gaining experience with tools like force plates, motion capture, or metabolic carts makes you a strong candidate for research and top sports internships.
- Build Strong Recommendation Relationships: Being professional in college means being visible. Start attending office hours with your Anatomy and Biomechanics professors as early as freshman year. You will need 3-4 detailed recommendation letters from faculty who can vouch for your clinical skills, not just your test scores.
