How do I start forming my political career as effectively as possible?

How do I start involving myself in activism and start building my political portfolio as an incoming undergrad sophomore? I'm looking to get into immigration, education, and legislative reform specifically.

In my opinion, from decades of having students wanting to become politically involved, the first move is to volunteer to work for a political party.

Most start as a "gofer" and, once established, do endless admin, and then electioneering when the election cycle hits.

It's normally a slow process, and one must be patient.

And enthusiastic.

And willing to work at odd hours.

And smile no matter what.

Community service is a great way to get direct experience helping people, listening to their challenges, and taking action. Find a group or two in your area that focus on your interests in immigration and education and join up. The legislative reform needed will become evident as you ask questions and learn what's been done, what's being done, and what needs to be done.
