Hi Christian,

When I was in my Senior year of high school, I befriended my digital arts teacher, who was kind enough to lend me some books and equipment to enhance my photography skills. Do you have a digital arts/ photography department at your school?

If not, consider contacting some small photography organizations, groups, or clubs in your area. If you wanted to go above and beyond, you could try to start your own! You will amaze yourself how quickly you improve when you surround yourself with those who share your values and hobbies.

If you decide you want to pursue photography in college, consider Mason Gross School of the Arts at Rutgers University. It is a competitive school that requires a solid portfolio, but I really loved it there, and I think you might, too! :)

Good luck!

Allen’s Answer

Photography happens to be a hobby of mine. When I began, I went out and bought a new dslr Pentax camera and ran around clicking and shooting.Sadly the pictures were not what I wanted. A friend gave me a Pentax K1000 that was the size a brick (and just as heavy) and told me if I could learn to shoot on it, I could shoot on anything. I quickly learned about Aperture, Lighting, Framing, Composition, and all the other skills needed for shooting. My advice would be to try to find an old camera and learn. If that is not possible, then take your time. Make each picture count instead of just pushing the button over and over again.

Probably the best way to learn how to take 'nice pictures' is to study photo's that you like. What draws your eye to that image? Composition, colors, subject, lighting, all place an important role in having an image stand out. Take your time when shooting an image and ask yourself:
- Is the background distracting?
- Is my subject well lit?
- Am I sure that my camera settings are close to being right? (Even pro's make adjustments)
- How am I composing my image?

Never stop learning new techniques and you will be amazed at what you can accomplish
