Hi Brenna,

Most of the time, interior designers work for home or office builders. However, they may have their own businesses. Interior designers must be able to create a space that is aesthetic, functional, and safe. They work to enhance the quality of living or working environment. They must make sure that living or working spaces have appropriate colors, lighting, and decoration. They must follow their client’s instructions. They must be good listeners and must be able to attend to the specific needs of their clients. They are involved in all aspects of the design process.

The annual salary for someone with the job title Interior Designer I may vary depending on a number of factors including industry, company size, location, years of experience and level of education.

Interior Designers who transition into a Design Director of Interior Design role may receive large pay increases as the latter position pays an average $72K per year. A common career progression for an Interior Designer is to become a Senior Interior Designer or an Interior Design Project Manager. Compared to Interior Designers, the first group earns $17K more on average, and the second group earns $8K more.

Linda’s Answer

What a interior design makes is based on how you are set up to work. If you work for a design firm you are salaried and this depends on many variables but 40k if you are assisting with the forms clientele but if you bring in your own clients you should be compensated with a percentage of the profit from your projects but remember you are able to succeed as you are using the firm assets and investments. If you go on your own you can set the bar for income. You charge an hourly fee plus a percentage on mark up for client purchase your discretion.
