Hi Makayla

Yes, there are lots of really good art schools, just google something like "top art schools in the US", or "art schools in Alabama" or whatever state you are interested in, or "best art schools for _________" for whatever type of art you like, and you'll get a listing of art schools, as well as colleges and universities with outstanding art departments.

Your job is to check them out and compare them with what YOU are looking for in an art school. Are you more fine art (painting, sculpture, printmaking etc.) oriented, or are you more graphic design (advertising, posters, websites, etc.) oriented, or industrial design oriented ( designing products such as computers, car, household goods, etc.), or fashion oriented (textile design, fashion design, etc.), or are you more interested in high tech art computer generated art, (like the special effects we see in the movies), or maybe more interested in the special effects with makeup, such as you see on the SIFI show "Face Off". There is a whole world of art out there.

I will also say that no matter what the reputation of an art school or department, it is really only as good as the effort a student puts into it. If the school meets your criteria in terms of academics, cost, living situation, and it is a place where you will be comfortable and can develop your art, then that is for you, a "good" art school.

So think about what you really like about art, think about what your strengths are, think about your financial resources for your college education, and think about what sort of situation or environment you'd like to practice your art some day. Have a conversation with your current art teacher about art schools, which ones they would recommend, which ones their previous students attended, etc. Talk to you guidance counselor at school to see what they have to say. Get a list from them of schools they suggest, or go to the internet and start from there. It will take some effort on your part, but it is your future, so it is well worth the effort!

Best wishes!

Rebecca’s Answer

Hi Makayla,

There are so many amazing art schools not only in the US, but all over the world. Choosing the right schools to apply to depends on what type of art you would like to pursue. There are various degrees you can get in the arts (ex. Fine arts, graphic design, theatre, architecture, film) and some schools have really strong programs in different areas.

I would recommend researching top schools in the fields you are interested in. Also, it might be helpful to connect with current art majors at the schools you are interested in to hear a little bit more about their experience.
