Hi Ryan,
Having a vision of the kind of career you desire is very admirable.
Mechanical engineering offers you a wide range of opportunities for crafting a fulfilling career for yourself. The auto industry is only one of them.
Excellence at college opens up doors for you. Internships and mentorships are good avenues for gaining practical experience as they allow you to bridge the gap between theory and practice.
Besides technical competence, there are a wide range of soft skills you require to build a successful career. They, amongst others, include ability to:
a) Work in teams
b) Organize yourself and your activities
c) Identify and solve problems
d) See the world as a connected set of problems
e) Effectively use science and technology
f) Collate, analyze and utilize information
Leadership and management skills are critical too. Additionally, doing what you love with passion puts you in a good stead to succeed.
Within the automotive industry, you may occupy roles in design, manufacturing, maintenance as well as research & development

Hi Ryan. You need to focus on building a strong foundation in your studies. Whenever you get the chance to do a project, lab, or research related to vehicles, take it. These experiences help you build real skills and give you great examples to talk about when you interview for jobs. If your school offers courses or workshops related to automotive engineering, make sure to join them.
Getting hands-on experience is just as important as doing well in school. You can look for internships or co-op positions at car companies or any engineering company where you can learn mechanical skills. Even if the company doesn't make cars, you'll still gain useful experience.
Networking is a powerful tool in any career path. You can attend career fairs and professional conferences to meet industry professionals. Also, don't hesitate to reach out to alumni from your college who work in the automotive field, they can offer valuable advice and even recommend you for opportunities.

Ryan, many of us wonder about this. The best advice is to discover what you love doing and make it your purpose. When you follow your passion, you can often find a way to earn money from it. Think about company founders; they were driven by creating something they cared about and then found a way to make it profitable. We can all do the same. As you begin your career, focus on what brings you joy and turn that into your opportunity. Don't hesitate to make changes if your passion and goals shift. You can always adapt! I hope this encourages you!
