To those who are veterinarians or veterinary students, what was the most unexpectedly difficult part of your journey in the field & how did you overcome?

#Fall 25
I'm a current senior in high school looking to major in either biology or animal science because I would like to get my doctorate and become a vet. From my research, it seems that there isn't just one set pathway for veterinary students so I'm weighing my pros and cons with each school and program I look at. Regardless of where I go, I want to be prepared and know what to expect.

Hi Riccia,

I am not a veterinarian, but one thing to keep in mind is that the animal is your patient, but you have to deal with the owner too! That means, you don't only need to master the science and medical skills, but you need to hone your soft skills and communication skills too.

You will be dealing with owners who don't have the financial means to get all the tests and treatments. You will be dealing with distraught owners who need to make difficult decisions. People will come to you and expect you to treat pets and stray for free "because you love animals", and you'll need to find a balance between being compassionate and helping but also having boundaries and being clear about what you can and can not do without going broke.

I hope this helps! All the best to you!
