Hi Kayla! Look to redo your schools logo- just for a project for yourself and portfolio. That will give you a good base to build from. Do the logo and mock- it up on merchandise (stanly mugs, tshirts, stickers), then make a school flier for anything going on at the school, try a social media post, make a website, make an app. Use your schools adobe account or canva to make all these things. You can also make up any business you want and also make the above things to get a portfolio going. Best of luck to you <3

Totally agree with Kat's answer - reach out to local businesses you like and offer them some limited (define what you're willing to do up front) "free" design work so you can start building your portfolio. Redoing a menu or logo or signage (or online work if you're focused on digital design) can mean a lot to them and create materials for your portfolio–paid or not. Sometimes when you do a small project first, they'll even be willing to pay you to do more. Careful to not overcommit or try to build something from scratch that's complex (especially not for free!), which is why logo or brand elements might be a good starting point. Good luck!
