What other skills besides creativity do graphic designers need to succeed?

Other than problem-solving skills and understanding of Adobe programs, what other skills do graphic designers use on a day to day basis? How are ideas and thoughts effectively communicated to clients and how do you stand out in networking events? Thank you in advance!!

Hi Natalia,

while hard skills are very important, I’d like to share some soft skills that have helped me a lot throughout my career.

One of the most important ones is good time management. Many times, we have multiple tasks at the same time, and knowing how to prioritize and allocate the right amount of time to each one is essential to achieving our goals.

Another key skill is assertive communication, both with your team and with clients. Knowing how to present yourself and clearly express your ideas makes a big difference, as it helps your message come across effectively and increases the chances of your ideas being understood and approved.

It’s also important to learn how to be firm and to develop leadership skills. I’m still learning myself, but these are things you gain along the way with experience.

I would like to add to the great answers given before me, you will need to develop marketing and sales skills for yourself. If you're opening your own design studio or even working for a company, Being able to pitch your design proposal/idea, justify it properly to the customer or your team is key in your success. We, as creatives, know we have good idea and that our ideas will be a success, but selling this idea (and I don't just mean money, I mean convincing others), is the hardest part because it requires us to use our left hemisphere of our brain which taps into logic and mathematical structure. Think revenue, think engagement, think return of investment (in money, time, and more).

Beyond creativity and Adobe skills, graphic designers use several core “day‑to‑day” skills:
- Communication & Time Management – listening to briefs, explaining your ideas simply, and taking feedback calmly. Juggling multiple deadlines
- Problem‑solving & critical thinking – turning abstract goals (“feel modern and trustworthy”) into clear visual solutions.
- Basic branding & strategy – understanding how design serves the client’s audience and business goals, not just “looking pretty.”

How designers communicate ideas to clients:
- Frame every idea around the client’s goal (“This helps your audience see X faster”).
- Use simple language + visuals (mood boards, mockups, before‑after comparisons) instead of design jargon.
- Present 2–3 directions with a clear reason for each, and invite focused feedback rather than open‑ended requests.
- Follow up with a short recap email to confirm decisions and next steps.

How to stand out at networking events:
- Show genuine interest: ask what they work on, what they like about their projects, and what they struggle with. Empathy is Important.
- Bring a portable, simple portfolio link (tablet or QR code) and briefly tell the story behind 1–2 projects.
- Focus on being memorable, not salesy – a few solid conversations beat handing out 30 business cards.

Beyond those core skills and tools every designer should have, there are a handful of very important soft skills to continually grow.

- Communication: Being able to explain design choices clearly and asking good questions when needed, is huge and can make or break a great designer.
- Receiving feedback well: Being able to take in feedback, make sure the feedback provider is heard, and revise work without getting defensive
- Collaboration: You will work with a wide variety of skills and roles as a designer, being able to collaborate and help others along the journey of design is important.
- Time management: Juggling deadlines, revisions, and priorities without losing quality. Rarely will you be focused on one thing at a time - find what works best for you, your approach here will evolve as you grow.
- Curiosity and learning mindset: This one is so important especially with AI... staying open to new tools, trends, and techniques.
- Attention to detail: This is one of the things that will make you stand out, noticing small issues that affect polish and professionalism.
- Adaptability: As a designer this can be tough, you have a style, being able to adjust to different styles, feedback, and business needs is huge and in the long run will make you a better designer.

Standing out at a networking event looks different for everyone - we are all a different level of intro/extroverts. That said, show genuine interest at these events, meet new people, have a way for them to contact you readily available ... this might be your website, LinkedIn, email, etc. Don't go in trying to sale yourself, if you are your genuine self - those connections will come organically and they will more often than not be the ones you actually want.
