What skills should I start building in college if I want to work on Wall Street?

I am a high school senior and I plan to study finance. I am interested in jobs like investment banking or financial analysis. What skills should I focus on, and what internships or clubs would help me stand out?

Beyond the technical skills and educational experiences, start building your network now and talk to as many people in finance or similar fields as possible. Alumni from your school, your relatives, neighbors, parents' friends....the more stories you hear, the more you'll learn and the better you'll get at networking and telling your story. These will be important skills in college and beyond as you seek out internships and jobs.

To really stand out in fields like investment banking or financial analysis, you will want to get comfortable with Excel and financial modeling as soon as you can, since being able to build a discounted cash flow analysis or understand a balance sheet is like learning the local language. Beyond the technical stuff, I'd suggest joining your college's investment club or a student-managed fund where you can actually pitch stocks and manage real money, as that hands-on experience is exactly what recruiters love to see on a freshman or sophomore resume. It's also worth looking into case competitions and early insight programs offered by big banks, which are often geared specifically toward underclassmen to help you get your foot in the door before the big junior year internship rush.
