How should I approach launching my first SaaS product as a software engineer?

Hello everyone,

I'm a software engineer currently working on building my first SaaS product. My goal is to launch it successfully and eventually turn it into a sustainable business.

I would love to learn from professionals who have experience building or launching SaaS products.

Here are a few questions I would appreciate your advice on:

* What steps should I follow before launching my SaaS product?
* How do I validate whether people actually need the product before investing more time and money?
* What are the biggest mistakes first-time SaaS founders usually make?
* How should I plan pricing, user acquisition, and marketing for the initial launch?
* If you were launching your first SaaS today, what would you do differently?

Any practical advice, resources, or lessons from your own experience would be greatly appreciated.

Thank you for your time and guidance!

Warm Regards

Based on my understanding of SaaS, before launching a SaaS product, focus on validating the problem rather than perfecting the technology. Talk to few potential customers to understand their pain points, current workflows, and whether they would actually pay for a solution. Build proof of concept early that solves one specific problem well, verify and gather feedback from your first 10 paying customers instead of waiting for a feature-complete product. Meet with users every week to understand what’s working and what’s not. For initial growth, rely on personal networks, online communities, content sharing, and direct outreach before investing in paid marketing. The biggest mistakes first-time founders make are building too many features, delaying launch, avoiding customer conversations, and waiting too long to monetize. If launching today, I’d spend more time validating the market, build fewer features, engage customers continuously, and iterate based on real feedback—because a successful SaaS business is driven as much by understanding customers, marketing, and sales as it is by writing great software.

Launching your first SaaS product is more than just coding. It's about solving a problem, finding the right audience, and improving based on real feedback. Before you start building, talk to potential customers, check out existing solutions, and make sure there's real interest in your idea. Share early versions with users so their feedback can help shape the product from the start. Create a simple initial version, launch it early, gather feedback, and improve it based on how people use it. Avoid adding unnecessary features and focus on a specific group of users. Make the onboarding process easy, build interest through a community or waitlist, and try to get a few paying customers early on, as this shows real interest.

Plan your pricing, marketing, and customer acquisition from the beginning. Track important metrics like retention, customer acquisition cost, lifetime value, and revenue to ensure steady growth. Focus on reliability, security, and customer support because trust is key for long-term success. Stay connected with your users, release updates regularly, and let their feedback guide your plans. Keep things simple and focus on understanding your market to ensure success.
