Hi Prachi, don't underestimate the experience that you have in zoology as you begin to explore analytics. There is data work in every field, and subject matter expertise is a super important part of being a successful data analyst. You may want to explore work or research where you can draw from both disciplines. Good luck!

Hi Prachi!

If there is one thing I have learned in my career is that it's always possible to make a change! I started my career getting a PhD in Biology and now I work as a Product Owner in Agile Product Development, two very different things. One thing to focus on when you're looking for opportunities in a new field is highlight how the skills you built in one area translate to another area. For instance, if you have been working in a lab on projects you can use that to show that you have project management experience, which translates to nearly any field you may want to pursue.

Best of luck!

Hi Prachi,
Thanks for your question and i am sharing this input basis my education and the current job i am doing. Moving from a B.Sc. in Zoology to Data Analytics for your master's is definitely possible, even in Asian countries. Many students have successfully made similar transitions. The key is to show your readiness and develop the right skills before applying.

Here's how you can prepare:

Eligibility: Universities abroad often welcome students from various backgrounds. They look for your interest in analytics, a good foundation in math/statistics, and some programming knowledge.

Bridging the Gap: Since your degree is in Zoology, taking short courses in Python, R, SQL, and statistics will be helpful. Certifications like Google Data Analytics or Microsoft Power BI can strengthen your profile.

Career Prospects: Data analytics is in high demand globally. In Asia, industries such as finance, healthcare, e-commerce, and IT services are hiring actively. Your zoology background might even give you an advantage in fields like bioinformatics, environmental data, or public health analytics.

Practical Steps:
1. Build a portfolio with small projects like data cleaning, visualization, and dashboards.
2. Highlight transferable skills such as research, data collection, and analysis that you already use in zoology.
3. Look for universities offering "bridge" or foundation courses for non-CS students.

Suggested Roadmap:
1. Next 3–6 months: Learn Power BI, SQL, and Python basics; complete a certification.
2. Month 6–9: Build and share 2–3 analytics projects online (GitHub/LinkedIn).
3. Year 1: Apply to master's programs in Asian countries (Singapore, Malaysia, South Korea) that accept diverse backgrounds.
4. Year 2+: Target roles in analytics, bioinformatics, or consulting, using both your zoology and data skills.

Don't let your current degree hold you back. What matters is your curiosity, willingness to learn, and effort in building relevant skills. Many students have successfully moved into analytics from non-technical fields. Your passion for exploring new opportunities, along with practical upskilling, will help you stand out. Wishing you all the best for your future. Take Care.

Andrew’s Answer

Yes, that's definitely possible, but you'll need to learn and get trained in it. It's never too late to change your career path, so follow your dream if that's what you really want. However, since you're already three years in and close to finishing your degree, I suggest completing it first before making a switch.

Eli’s Answer

Hi Prachi. You can. Just make sure you understand the downsides. I myself went to undergrad for Aviation Science and then went for an MBA with a Finance concentration. Ultimately it took me an extra few months of school due to me not having all the pre reqs required for my MBA.
