Hi,
You have a good answer above, I will add a few ideas. As a writer, anything you write will help you to build your writing portfolio...you can start of by writing articles for your local newspaper or publications, online articles, check into self publishing articles on to online blogs, magazines and publications.

Become active in the writing community. There are writing groups and freelance writer associations in many countries and it's a good idea to belong to them so that you can meet other writers, get information and advice, and establish your credentials as a writer. A quick search online should find organizations in your local area or country. Look for a group that has meet-ups, seminars, guest speakers, and offers advice on all aspects of writing including publishing and marketing, as well as having contacts with publishers and networking opportunities. Many of these groups may also be an excellent resource for writing job leads, so being a part of them will soon pay back in terms of contacts and work offers.

Good luck, Gary

Hi Daniel, All the suggestions above are great, in addition, I am a big believer in internships, co-op jobs, you can use these skills to get to your goal. You will want to major in Journalism, or Communication. I think a lot of newspapers are moving towards online publications and social media. If you can work for a school newspaper, try to grow online publication and social media outreach. Another area you might want to look into is book reviews. Anyone can submit a book review (even start out on Amazon). These can showcase your writing skills and your ability to analyze content, present ideas in a user friendly readable format. In summary, publish, publish, publish.
