Sneha’s Answer

That is a great question as I have personally had difficulties when choosing a career. I went with commerce because of peer pressure and then appeared for my CAT exams and got through a Tier B school. I realised though, that what I was interested in was becoming a lawyer and then went on to do my 3 year LLB. It definitely would have saved me a year if I had realised it earlier but given the times we are in now, the world has so much to offer (including the new age educational institutes in India). The lines between the traditional educational streams are blurring and one does not need to limit oneself to a set path. I have friends who are engineers but manage hedge funds with no background knowledge of commerce and then, on the other hand, some friends have a typical finance degree but have gone on to become excellent marketing/sales managers. Just focus on what you want to do and then draw a path - becomes easier that way. You already did the right thing by asking a question here.

Sneha recommends the following next steps:

Find a senior on LinkedIn and ask for a few minutes of career advice. Seniors from your Alma Mater are more likely to spend that time.
Try doing short internships for roles that seem interesting to you and you can filter out from there.
Attend seminars/fairs to evaluate different career paths and the education path that you may need.
Plan your hunt in terms of the time within which you want to complete your education, your interests, the expenses, scholarships, extra-curricular activities, etc.

Delina’s Answer

There is a variety of jobs you can do in commerce. Commerce is a very broad term for business. You can be anything from Store manager, real estate agent, technology, sports management, office employee etc.. It just depends on what area of business you are interested in. My degree is in business administration which is commerce field. I now work as a Real estate asset manager for Fannie Mae. That means I manage the housing inventory for the company and make decisions concerning that asset. I work closely with real estate agents on the ground and other individuals such as repair contractors, field vendors etc...My advise is to do a research on commerce (you can use google to search "jobs in commerce" and look at all the jobs then narrow down what area of business you would be interested in and go for it! Good luck!
