Lao’s Answer

Hi! An aerospace engineer makes an average of $83k per year. The range is from $61k- $129K depending on where you live.

Matt’s Answer

It depends!

It depends on where they are located. There’s a concept called “Cost of Labor” that influences salaries in different locales around the country. It’s often, but not always, highly correlated to Cost of Living. Salaries are higher in places that are more expensive to live.

My research shows that a starting salary for a new graduate aerospace engineer is around $50,000 at the lowest, and can go as high as $75,000 for some locales. As your experience increases (often measured by years in the industry) your salary typically goes up too. I wouldn’t be surprised to learn that the average salary for all aerospace engineers is above $100,000 in most locales.

Matt recommends the following next steps:

Where do you live now? What is your estimate of the cost of labor and the cost of living?
Where do you want to live as a working adult? What does your research indicate the cost of living is there?
