Hi Sukritta,

It is definitely a tough time for tourism and hospitality right now. I was working in Hospitality for 4 years then changed my career to Data Science. During this difficult time, I think it's good to consider picking up some technical skills ( i.e: Excel, SQL, tour booking system). It seems like even after this pandemic is over, most of us will be working from home and technology will definitely be implemented and remain, I might say, forever in any industry.

To secure a job from the next pandemic or any crisis, I think it's important to evaluate the job market and understand how to make yourself more marketable and adaptable. I would recommend doing your research to see which part/position of the tourism industry that is not affected as much by the pandemic and is always needed!

You can definitely look into remote internships and network with people in the field to get their insights!

Best of luck!

Be kind to yourself. It is important to understand that during these tough times and moments that this is out of our control and that is okay! Employers could potentially have hiring freezes at this time, but continue to send in your resumes and materials. The easiest way not to get a job is by not putting your applications in. Best way to get a job is through connecting with people. Reach out to companies that you are interested in and have informational interviews, this creates rapport with you and the company. Volunteer or try getting an unpaid/paid internship, by doing this they will be able to bring you on and see your skills and work ethic. Once freezes end you could potentially get an offer to come on. Worse case scenario they don't offer you a job but you have experience to put down for future applications. Also, unpaid work during a pandemic shows dedication and ambition. Best of luck!

Alfredo’s Answer

Hi Sukritta,

Reach out to those companies you are interested in, ask them how you could help out in a non-traditional manner. Offer to help without being compensated and that should help opening doors for you.

Hope this helps!

I used to work in the hospitality industry in my early career and know its been hit hard. But I am sure it will bounce back so don't give up.
I would recommend building a list of hotels, chamber of commerce, convention bureaus near you and do a targeted job search. Research the organizations, see who you may be connected to there, if you don't see openings then set up job search alerts on their career sites ....take it one action item at time!
