Ashley’s Answer

Of course men can be nurses, just like women can be doctors. The mindset that nurses are women and doctors are men is extremely outdated and it kind of makes me sad that people still think this way! It IS true that the majority of nurses are still women, but male nurses are in high demand! Obviously, men are capable of heavier lifting than women (that's just science, not sexism) which is definitely helpful when caring for patients, but there are so many other, more substantial reasons for you to pursue nursing. Some patients aren't comfortable with women caregivers due to religion, embarrassment, or whatever other reason- just like some women aren't comfortable with men taking care of them. You could offer a different perspective when problem solving as part of a health care team as well... As a charge nurse myself, I can tell you that nursing is a wonderful profession and it's worth looking into. There are countless specialties within the field as well, so you'd never run out of options- not to mention the fact that you can go on to get a masters or doctorate in nursing. Please don't let ignorant people deter you from at least looking into nursing as a future career!

Mark’s Answer

I'm not in nursing, but I have seen many male nurses in hospitals, doctor's offices, and clinics. I think it is a fine profession for anyone to go into. You are able to help people and make a living doing it.

Best wishes!

Jeanne’s Answer

Yes indeed Boys can be Nurses! One question only to ask yourself, is Nursing your passion? There are many male Nurses in the field today and many more studying as we speak. Sex no longer plays a role in Nursing as a career. The most important thing is that you are sure that Nursing is your true calling. Try volunteering with a Hospice or Hospital or Nursing Home in order to get into the "atmosphere". Search your heart and you will see that you already know the answer, you just needed a little validation. Go for it!

Jeanne recommends the following next steps:

Start applying to Nursing Schools immediately!
Volunteer!
Follow your calling!

Deb’s Answer

Absolutely. A nurse is a nurse weather male or female. Occasionally you may run into a patient that feels shy around the opposite sex and prefers same sex nurses. Assignments can be adjusted to accommodate this. Good luck!
