Hello Connor. I have good news - fire departments are very good at teaching you everything you need to know to be a firefighter! They put on very thorough training academies that cover all the major subjects. Kind of like the military, someone from any background can join the fire department and be successful.

That said, there are many areas that a thorough knowledge of will make you a better firefighter. To name a few..... small engine repair, carpentry, basic automobile maintenance, anatomy & physiology, etc. While these things will make you a better firefighter, they are not by any means required.

The things you must know to be a firefighter that they will not teach you is how to behave professionally, work hard without complaining, clean up after yourself, never lie steal or cheat, treat citizens and other firefighters with respect regardless of how much you like them, constantly learn new things, practice fundamental skills, go the extra mile, etc.

I hope that answers your question! If you have any follow up questions, just let me know.
