What college majors should I apply to in order to be a diplomat?

I want to be a diplomat or even work for the U.N, but I am unsure what I should major in. I am currently leaning towards Economics, Journalism, and probably will go to law school. Any other suggestions? #international-affairs #united-nations #diplomacy

Sounds like a plan! Although my background's in engineering, I think you may want some Political Science or International Affairs / Business in there, too. Plus comfort with at least one other language, too. And if you can get into a "Study Abroad for a Year" program through your school, woo hoo! Best wishes on your major, the world needs great diplomats!

Todd’s Answer

There is no specific major that will position you to become a diplomat. More important is to develop the skills to write clearly and succinctly, deliver top notch oral briefings and presentations, understand the major political and economic events of the day (read The Economist every week!), and develop good interpersonal skills.

If you want to work for the UN, you will probably have to speak an additional UN language besides English (French, Russia, Chinese).

I would echo Frank's answer about learning a language and also studying abroad. The other thing is look at getting an internship with the State Department. They offer them overseas as well, so you can do it in DC or overseas. It is a great opportunity for you to really learn more about the organization! Good luck.
