How do police work for so long?

Greetings! I'm Ms. Tipton at the International Community School. My 3rd graders have a few questions and I'd like to share your advice with them. Thanks in advance!

Hi! Many police officers work shifts that are ten or twelve hours long. While this might seem like a long time, they are rewarded with having longer weekends. If they work ten-hour shifts, they work four days a week instead of the traditional five days a week. Then they have three days off, rather than two days off. So, there is a personal reward in it for them. Officers like having three days off because it gives them more time to spend with their families, or time to do special projects, like planting a garden.

Think about it this way. If you were told that if you kept your room clean for a whole month you could have a pizza party, would you do it?

Thank you for your interest in law enforcement!

I had the privilege to be a Police Officer for 10 years. I found it to be very rewarding as you get to help people. In fact what I found was the police officers spend a majority of their time helping those people that need help. They work long rewarding hours to help those in their community.
