What are some career opportunities that are located in the Greater New York City area?

I am a student going into my junior year of high school. I live around the Greater New York City area and was wondering if there were any job opportunities that I would potentially be interested in taking up in the city. I know the business/economic side is booming in that region of the world as well. The examples you will provide will not really make a huge impact on my career choice because some jobs are just not for me. Your answers will just widen my knowledge of city jobs near me. #career #career-path #student #employment-opportunities #city #new-york-city

Hi!

There are a myriad of job opportunities as well as industries in New York. There are however, certain industries that a definitely more prevalent. Ones that come to minds are the following:

Finance (more so in investment banking than corporate finance)
Fashion
Tech (is growing rapidly as more and more start ups are being established in New York as opposed to San Francisco)
Healthcare (NY has a hub of medical centers as well as medical schools)
Insurance
Consulting
Restaurants/ Food
Law

Ultimately, I would suggest thinking about what you like to do and then find out how your skills can match the industry you're interested in. If you're an accountant, then it's possible to go work for any company since every company has that department.

Good Luck!

Hi Karen!

One of the best ways to learn about careers is to participate in coop, intern, shadowing, and volunteer programs related to your career area. Your school counselor can hep you locate such programs.

Also, you can talk to your favorite teachers, your school counselor, and your reference librarian about locating and attending professional organizations that represent people in careers of your interest. They are always welcome to students at such associations.

Please let me know if and how this helped. Keep me informed. I would like to follow your progress.

Thank you comment icon Best of luck! Please keep me posted. I would like to see what works for you! Also, if you want to explore any colleges, call the head of the alumni relations department of that college and ask to meet graduates of that school in your major career area who are living and working near you, so that you can see what they are doing, how they got there, and how you feel about what they are doing. The head of alumni relations knows where all of the graduates are located and what they are doing - it is that person's job. He/she will be very happy to help!!! Happy exploring!!! Ken Simmons

Jordanā€™s Answer

The options in the NYC area are extremely vast as most industries have a big presence and most large corporations have an office/operations in that area. The big industries tend to be Finance, Tech, Advertising/Marketing, Fashion, Publishing, PR, Media, etc. That being said, there are plenty of opportunities in other industries as well. A great way to explore more is by looking at job postings (LinkedIn, etc.) to see what areas and companies are showing up.
