What you might do does depend on your current education level.

If you're in high school, then I would say don't worry about it for now. You can explore lots of different career paths in college.

If you're in college, then I would say to start looking for opportunities to shadow surgeons. This might be through a medicine-related student group at your school, or even by contacting a local hospital.

If you're in medical school, then I would just talk to your instructors or fellow students, try to learn more about what being a surgeon entails, and learn from their experiences.

Hi!

I would say that if you are in college, you should try to observe some surgical procedures. You can start with family friends who are in medicine or by cold calling/emailing clinics. I know that can seem a little intimidating at first, but most doctors are really understanding, because they once likely wanted/needed that experience too! If you have the time, you could also work or volunteer in a hospital or private practice. This would be a great way to build relationships with a physician or surgeon and gain exposure to the medical field. Don't be afraid to check out other fields either, even if you don't like them as much, knowing what you don't enjoy is also good information to have! You may also find something you love from exploration.

It's important that you remember that when you get to medical school, you still have time. You don't have to decide what you want right away, and it's always okay to change your mind regardless of where you are in your career path, especially if you are unhappy or unfulfilled.
