How do you become good at being a mixologist?

Where would be a good place to open a bar? Or to be a personal mixologist? #business

Thank you comment icon You can self educate via the internet and how to books and videos. You can also pay for formal training at a bartending school or informal training while working at a bar or restaurant. Taylor Smith

Colleen’s Answer

Practice makes perfect! Start with a class, use bottles with food coloring to improve your pouring ability, work on your palette so you understand the way the taste of things work together (food and non-alcoholic beverages work if you are underage). You need to better identify the demographic you are after before you decide on an area. If your establishment is focused on low-cost, high volume, no frills- a college town might be the best place. If you plan to create an upscale atmosphere, you may want to try a more affluent area. Don't open the wrong kind of bar in the right kind of place! Good luck!

Chris’s Answer

Distribution companies support local accounts with marketing, mixology, training of staff, etc. Having experience in a bar would be paramount to applying for this type of career path.

Chris recommends the following next steps:

Begin as a bar back
Get solid experience as a bartendar
Register for local competitions
Advance to bar or food & beverage manager
Research local distribution companies for positions in mixology
