Judi’s Answer

In my past experience I was a coordinator who managed graphic designers for print production - many were contracted to do specific projects. I then moved on to managing operations for a small software development company and hired graphic designers to help configure the software’s User Interface. Graphic design is the art of combining text and pictures but it does not need to be print. It can be digital, and digital is going to be around for a long time. However, while getting into the business keep your job search broad. You may more likely land a layout and design job for a communications department than a pure graphic design job until you build an impressive portfolio. The market is extremely competitive in this field. Good luck!

Hi Adam,

Like most jobs, it depends on where you are looking to work - the industry and the geographic location. In this day and age, you can work from anywhere but it still matters where your audience is. Full time graphic design is a job that is earned. Very few people begin with that job unless they already have a solid portfolio out of college. You may consider entering with one aspect of graphic design, such as being really good with written copy or really good with the creation of images like icons.

Kremena’s Answer

Hi Adam,

Graphic design will exist as long as advertising and products exist. So I don't expect it to become an irrelevant role anytime soon. What is important to consider though is requirements for the role vary and they evolve based on advertising and product needs. Years ago, print was the norm and the most popular communication/ad channel and medium. Right now, facebook and instagram advertising is the most popular, engaging and cheap one. So preparing digital graphic materials will be a requirement for any employer - understanding how facebook will cut your designs based on the device, what are some trends in the area and others will be important differentiator between you and other candidates. Understanding web design is also a big plus. UI/UX is a completely different expertise, but graphic design foundation will help you transition into this career as well if you'd like.
