What classes do I need to take in college to be a Digital Media Specialist?

I am taking digital media this year (my sophomore year) and I really like it. I don't know what classes to take in college though. #broadcast-journalism #magazine #digital-media #tv-production

In addition to what others have said, it also depends on what aspect of digital marketing would you like to focus on. Do you like to media buying and planning aspect of the industry, or are you more intrigued by the data analysis and data science aspect? I am a fairly big data nerd, and even though I didn't study this in college, its an absolutely interesting field for me. It's also a field that is continually changing and growing, so you will always have challenges ahead of you (in a good way). I would also look into getting Google Analytics certified. It's a free course and offers a lot of helpful information. They also have other free courses that can help navigate your interest in the direction that best suits you.

Nakul recommends the following next steps:

Google Analytics Certifications.

Not sure what classes there are nowadays that people can take for digital media (when I was in college there were no such classes, that I knew of at least). I think the best type of experience you can get it real life experience so I would definitely recommend doing an internship so you can see all the different sides/aspects of advertising (and there are a ton). Here are some examples:

- Digital Media (Buying/Planning)
- Digital Media (Sales/Planner/Account Management)
- Creative
- Analytics

Good luck!

A digital specialist should have a good understanding of marketing, communications e-commerce and coding. Taking basic business courses (marketing ,advertising, PR, media planning, etc.) as well as any digital, coding and eCommerce courses offered will put you in a good position to begin your career after you graduate. To further enhance your marketability, I recommend finding internships to get some real world experience in the field.

Bobby’s Answer

This totally depends on your college and what classes are being offered. I minored in Marketing and was able to take some amazing classes like Advertising and Promotions, which really offered a good foundation of what advertising and media is in general. Digital media has obviously grown substantially and is constantly evolving.

Make as many contacts as you can, pick their brains, ask questions, and always stay curious! Also, if you can land an internship somewhere thats a huge opportunity to see the lay of the land!

Hope this helps!
