Paul’s Answer

It really depends on what sector you are employed.

Private sector security officers on average are paid $27,500 per year. This includes private business security, mall security, industrial security, and other private supported entities.

Public sector officers are paid on average around $83,000 dollars a year. These are state and federal government security positions. This includes areas like Homeland Security, public building security, security for colleges and universities and other state and government facilities.

So, as you can see there is a significant difference in the two sectors.

Paul recommends the following next steps:

When you check online, research the salary and benefits for both private security companies and public sector security positions
See what education and experience is required for both the public and private sector

Cayla’s Answer

Great Question! The Average pay of a security guard can vary widely, as the name is used pretty loosely throughout occupations.

An armed security guard can make around $36,500, while those who aren’t licensed to carry can make anywhere from $12.50 to $15.70/hr. If you are going into this field for monetary purposes, considering a license would be a great place to start. If you have little to no experience, are entry level, or just have a passion for this field & want to get your feet wet, apply for common area jobs, I.e malls, apartment complexes, etc.

Cayla recommends the following next steps:

Job searches such as Indeed, Zip Recruiter, LinkedIn etc. are great starting points to find local jobs in your area. Plug in Security Guard Jobs and filter searches to your location.
Check the requirements to carry in your state, and start considering options if that’s what you chose to do.
Search for jobs at your current level of expertise and continue to get experience while working behind the scenes.
You never know, work hard & it may get recognized. A promotion in the workplace is always a bonus and creates seniority in the workplace. You got this!

Harold’s Answer

The average pay for a security officer varies from state to state and the type of security you are performing.
Government security jobs can have a top secret security clearance. The government also pays a living wage. My officer are now making $18 an hour.
During my career, I started making $9.00 an hour in 1993. By 1996, that pay rose to $9.70. My highest was $25 an hour in 2010. Then it dropped. Today, I am making $18. I was making that in 1996 when I first started working in NYC.
