It depends on the state/municipality. Most police departments have an affiliated police academy, although they differ as to whether a candidate enters the academy before or after being hired by a police department. Some academies guarantee employment upon graduation, whereas others do not. Requirements to enter police academies vary. Some require only a high school diploma/GED whereas others require some college, associates, or a full bachelor's degree. In addition to education, candidates often have to undergo a background check, psychological screening, and physical fitness test before being admitted.

Most agencies will conduct background checks with your application. You'll need a college degree, Associates degree of higher, Your will be required to pass a department licensing exam and undergo a psychological evaluation.
Once having completed the afore mentioned steps you'll need to meet continuing education requirements and training to maintain license renewal.
