Hi Summer!

To be a doctor and then go into pediatrics, there are a few steps that need to be completed:

4 years of high school

4 years of undergraduate school. This is to get your bachelor's degree. Consider getting as many credits as possible at a community college and then transferring to a university. Saves a lot of money! Make sure to take classes that transfer though. Make sure the degree you get in university also fulfills the requirements for medical school.

4 years of medical school, either MD or DO. This is 2 years of hard book learning and then 2 years of clinical rotations.

And finally,
4 years of training specifically for pediatric patients - this is your residency. Thankfully, these are paid positions so you won't be paying tuition here.

I hope this helps!
GOOD LUCK! YOU CAN DO IT!

Noah’s Answer

I don't think you should choose any career just because you "like helping people." The purpose of virtually any job is that you are infact helping people. That's why you get paid to do it; the only difference is the amount & way that you help people. Consider your interests, aptitudes and what you might want activities you might want to do in a career. There are thousands of jobs that involve directly helping people, not just doctors and pediatricians. Those two jobs are very long commitments but they also can be pretty rewarding.

Noah recommends the following next steps:

Consider other aspects of what you like, value and are good at, other than just wanting to help people

Sunil’s Answer

Hi Summer.
Good to read your Future plans. You are setting yourself up for an exciting and rewarding career. And with the determination and commitment you will be able to fulfill your goals. First steps in achieving your goals to be a physician or pediatrician would be complete focus on your studies from high school through the college, into the medical school. although it requires a lot of commitment and perseverance, with the positive attitude and belief in yourself you can definitely achieve your goals.
So after high school you have to complete four years of undergraduate college and then four years of medical school. After completing medical school you have to complete three years of residency training in pediatrics that makes you eligible to get the Medical license as well as to practice as a pediatrician.
Good Luck.
