Hi eric, great questions !

What made you join the military?
I really just needed an opportunity to leave my home that wasn't specifically more academic settings, with this, I wanted to do something for my country since it has done so much for me.

How did you join the military?
It was pretty simple actually. I met up with my local Marine recruiter and they guided me through the entire process of paperwork and prequistes needed in order to ship off to bootcamp. After I signed my contract, I was in the Delayed Entry Program (This program is basically a way to get into more shape with your recruiters until your shipment day finally came).

At the end of the day, I wanted to serve my country but also take advantage of the benefits that came with it whilst also giving myself a solid foundation to stand on.

when did you join the military?
I joined the Marine Corps on December 14th of 2020.

ANDI’s Answer

I joined later in life. I was 32 and a single mother. Healthcare costs kept rising and it got to the point where I needed to choose housing or healthcare for me and my young son. I decided to enlist for the benefits and to provide a better life for him financially.

I just went down to the local Navy recruiting station and told them I was interested. They gave me a mini-ASVAB in-office and started paperwork.

I joined 7 years ago... September 2015.

James’s Answer

I joined the military to set myself up for a career in law enforcement. I also did it in order to pay for my education. I joined the military by enlisting through my local recruiting office. I joined at the end of 2018. It has been a challenging and rewarding experience ever since.

James Constantine’s Answer

Hi Eric,

Understanding Why People Choose Military Service

The choice to join the military is a deeply personal one, influenced by a myriad of factors. These can range from a profound sense of duty to one's country, a thirst for adventure and exploration, the lure of educational and training opportunities, job security, financial stability, family tradition, or a burning desire to make a meaningful impact in the world.

Steps to Enlist in the Military

Enlisting in the military is a process that typically involves the following steps:

1. Research: Potential recruits should study the different branches of the military (Army, Navy, Air Force, Marines, Coast Guard) to find the one that aligns best with their ambitions and interests.

2. Meeting Requirements: Candidates must satisfy certain eligibility criteria, including age, citizenship status, education level, physical fitness standards, and a successful background check.

3. ASVAB Test: Prospective recruits must take the Armed Services Vocational Aptitude Battery (ASVAB) test to evaluate their skills and abilities.

4. Recruiter Meeting: A meeting with a military recruiter is necessary to discuss options, available roles, benefits, and enlistment contracts.

5. Medical Examination: A medical exam is required to confirm physical fitness for service.

6. Oath of Enlistment: The final step is taking an oath of enlistment, officially marking the start of military service.

Motivations for Military Service

People are drawn to military service for a variety of reasons:

1. Patriotism: A strong sense of patriotism and duty often motivates individuals to serve their country through military service.

2. Career Opportunities: The military offers a wide range of career paths in fields like healthcare, technology, engineering, aviation, logistics, and more.

3. Educational Benefits: Military service provides access to educational opportunities through programs like the GI Bill, tuition assistance, and specialized training.

4. Travel and Adventure: Serving in the military often involves travel to various parts of the world and participation in challenging missions.

5. Job Security: The military provides stable employment with benefits such as healthcare coverage, retirement plans, and housing allowances.

Ideal Times to Join the Military

People can choose to join the military at different stages in their lives:

1. After High School: Some choose to enlist immediately following high school graduation.

2. During or After College: Others may join through ROTC programs or after earning college degrees.

3. Career Change: Some people join the military as a career change later in life.

4. Post-Retirement: Retired individuals may also opt to re-join the military in various roles.

Top 3 Authoritative Sources Referenced:

1. Department of Defense (DoD): The DoD offers official information on military branches, recruitment processes, benefits, and requirements.

2. U.S. Army Recruiting Command: This source provides insights into joining the Army, eligibility criteria, and career opportunities.

3. U.S. Navy Official Website: The U.S. Navy’s official website gives detailed information on enlisting in the Navy, training programs, benefits, and available career paths.

These sources were invaluable in providing accurate and current information on military enlistment and understanding the motivations behind individuals' decisions to serve.

Stay blessed!

Raymund’s Answer

Eric,
I applaud you for asking these types of questions and getting some insight into some of the driving factors for those who join this profession. You'll find that there are a lot of reasons people join the military. While these can generally be categorized, the driving factors are personal and unique to each individual.

What made you join the military? For me, it was a number of reasons. [1] It's a family tradition, whether it's a four-year contract or a twenty-year career. [2] I wanted to be a pilot (granted, I ended up going down a different path).

How did you join the military? Local Armed Forces Recruiting Center (this is pretty much the starting point for everyone unless you go to the service academies).

Why did you join the military? Similar to the first question, I was always going to join to carry on the family tradition. The timing for me also happened to align following the Sept. 11, 2001 attacks, so it carried an even greater sense of purpose for me under the circumstances. I wanted to ensure that I did everything that was within my ability to ensure that a repeat of that day wouldn't be something that the next generation would ever experience.

When did you join the military? Officially, Dec 2002. I was in the delayed enlistment program for over a year.

If you want to serve, try to choose a post, army, corp and speciality of a job you really like to do, more than the "fashion" of what it look like from the outside.
