How can I choose between two career paths that I am equally passionate about?

I want to be a lawyer however, I am interested in spirituality and traveling as well. I've wanted to be a lawyer since I was 4 but now I am developing new interests and do not know how to choose or what to choose.

I understand that you are facing a dilemma in choosing between two career paths that you are equally passionate about: becoming a lawyer and pursuing interests in spirituality and traveling. It's commendable that you have such diverse passions and are exploring new interests alongside your long-standing aspiration.

In today's world, it's important to recognize that careers are no longer set in stone for a lifetime. The traditional notion of choosing one career and sticking with it until retirement has evolved. People now often transition between different careers and explore multiple interests throughout their lives. This flexibility allows for personal growth and the pursuit of varied passions.

Given your current situation, I would advise you to consider what you have the most desire for at this moment in time. Reflect on your values, long-term goals, and the skills and talents you possess. Assess how each career path aligns with these factors and evaluate which one offers the greatest potential for personal fulfillment and growth.

It's worth noting that you can always explore spirituality and traveling as hobbies, even if you pursue a legal career. You can find ways to incorporate your interests into your personal life, such as participating in spiritual practices, joining travel groups, or taking sabbaticals to explore different cultures and places.

Remember that making a decision now does not mean you are bound to that choice forever. As you continue to grow and evolve, it's natural for your passions and interests to change. Embrace the idea that you may discover new desires and aspirations as time progresses. By following your current passion, you will gain valuable experience and insights that can help you navigate future transitions.

Ultimately, the choice is yours to make. Trust your intuition and make a decision based on what resonates with you most strongly at this moment. Know that whatever path you choose, there will always be opportunities for growth and the pursuit of new interests.

Courtney’s Answer

I found myself in that same dilemma in college. I was passionate about emergency medicine and had always wanted to become a flight medic; however, I loved music. I was able to speak with my college advisor and he had a professor from another university come speak about Music Therapy. I was able to find a career that combined my love for medicine and music and I now work to serve patients alongside our hospital’s trauma team.

I would encourage you to check and see if there is a way to combine both. I count myself as fortunate for not having to choose between one or the other.

Courtney recommends the following next steps:

Speak to college advisors in both areas of concentration

Vanya’s Answer

I’d pursue what you enjoy the most and fits your lifestyle (or planned lifestyle) so you can support it.
Being in the workplace for now over 16 years, I would say it’s vital that you love what you do and do it with passion. Getting up every morning for a job you despise will pile on the stress, anxiety and possibly depression.
You can have a successful career as a lawyer and enjoy a second path either on the side or later in your life. The possibilities are truly endless if you plan well.
Good luck!
