Howard’s Answer

Pay attention to your chef. Listen, follow instructions, ask questions if you are not sure and practice. You will get better as you gain experience. Nothing happens overnight.

Jerome’s Answer

Keep practicing! There are so many YouTube videos and other resources that can help guide your growth. Results will come over time if you stay consistent with trying new things, and not being afraid to make mistakes. you’ll get to where you want to be.

I found a book early on called “How To Cook Everything”. I bought that maybe 15 years ago and still look at it today.

Jerome recommends the following next steps:

Keep Practicing
Write Down Recipes You Try
Add Notes To The Above
Try New Things!

Yves’s Answer

Practice, practice, practice. Repetition helps you get comfortable at specific tasks. It also gives you the comfort to change a recipe or tweak a technique to save you time and/or effort. Learn from your mistakes, do not get frustrated if a preparation doesn't come out right. Identify the issue, try again, and perfect it.
If have the chance to work in food service, go for it! Starting as a prep cook will eat the best way to gain speed and knowledge of ingredients while making some bucks.
