Practice is important, but structured practice is even more important. I would suggest starting with a voice lesson or two - even if you don't continue voice lessons, you will learn what techniques are helpful while you practice on your own.

As far as writing music, most high schools and colleges have music theory courses. I think a strong foundation in music theory is important for anyone attempting to make it a career.

If you're serious about pursuing a career as a singer, you absolutely need to take lessons. Getting a professional's assessment about your strengths/weaknesses is so valuable.

Also, I heard Madonna sings while she runs to build her voice endurance, so there's that.
