How do walk-ons work in college? Can you just decide to be on a team if you're good enough?

I play soccer and I want to play in college and walk on but I don't know how. #soccer #sports #college-sports #athletics

Great Question Samantha. Generally, teams will have a walk-on try out before the season starts. This is one way to walk on a team. Each team is allocated a certain number of scholarships each year. As such, there are several instances where the team does not have enough full scholarships to give out. In this case, they may recruit you to be a walk on. If you decide on a school and want to join their team, you may be able to email the coach and ask them how you can join the team/try out for the team. I would recommend sending in some of your stats when you do so. Also, most schools have clubs sports. As such, just because you are not able to walk on to their team does not mean you can't play soccer in college. There likely is a club team that you can join to still compete in a sport you love.

Jacob’s Answer

Many colleges hold walk on try outs but I would suggest reaching out to the coaches prior to graduation and build the relationship to improve your chances of making the team.
