What is the best way to get financial help for college?

I am a high school senior who is in great need of scholarship money because I have no financial help and this is the only way I can afford college. I am planning to go to Murray State University to major in graphic design.

Deepti's answer is excellent! Here's some more advice:

Getting a scholarship is important, but if it doesn't cover everything, there are other ways to manage. You can find work on campus, like as a teaching assistant or in other campus jobs, and even look for higher-paying part-time work off campus. Be sure to save as much money as you can. Live cheaply, cook your meals, and manage your money wisely. This way, you can save for future semesters.

These times might feel challenging, but keep going! Soon, you'll graduate with little to no debt, gain work experience, and become skilled at managing your finances and career. After that, the possibilities are endless! Best of luck, and I hope you get the scholarship too.

Last thing, you can always join a graphic designer job in the local community, or ring up local influencers who are looking for help and secure a job with them.

Planning ahead is smart, and there are ways to get financial help for college if you act early and stay determined. Since you're going to Murray State University for graphic design, follow these steps to secure financial aid:

1. **Fill Out the FAFSA (Free Application for Federal Student Aid) Immediately**
- Visit [FAFSA.gov](https://studentaid.gov/).
- This application checks if you can get federal grants (free money), student loans, and work-study opportunities.
- Complete it even if you think you won’t qualify; many scholarships and schools require it.
- **Tip:** If your income is low or you lack family financial support, you might get Pell Grants (up to ~$7,395/year).

Deepti recommends the following next steps:

Reach Out for Local Scholarships Ask around in your: - High school guidance office– they often have a list of local scholarships. - Local banks, churches, rotary clubs, small businesses, and foundations. - State programs in Kentucky (like KEES scholarships, if you qualify).
2. Look for Graphic Design and Art Scholarships. Many national scholarships are available for students interested in design or art: - Scholastic Art & Writing Awards - Create-A-Greeting-Card Scholarship - Adobe Design Achievement Awards- Against the Grain Artistic Scholarship - National Art Honor Society Scholarships (if you're in NAHS) - Check sites like: - [Fastweb.com](https://www.fastweb.com/) - [Scholarships.com](https://www.scholarships.com/) - [Bold.org](https://bold.org/) - [Cappex.com](https://www.cappex.com/)
3. Apply for Murray State-Specific Scholarships Murray State offers scholarships for incoming freshmen. Check out: - [Murray State Scholarship Website](https://www.murraystate.edu/scholarships) - Pay special attention to: - MSU Academic Achievement Scholarships - Diversity Scholarships - Departmental Scholarships(check with the Art & Design Department) - Racer Success Scholarship for students with financial need
Consider Work-Study and Campus Jobs- If you qualify through FAFSA, Federal Work-Study gives you part-time campus jobs that can help cover costs. Even if you don't qualify, look for on-campus graphic design jobs or internships — they can provide money and experience.
Bonus Tips: - Build a strong portfolio — it can help with scholarships in art and design. - Write a killer personal statement— especially for need-based and creative scholarships. Want help writing one? I’d be happy to review it. -Keep applying, even after school starts — many scholarships are available to current college students too.
