How can I break into the UX industry?

Hi, I am a graduate student pursuing my MS in Human-Computer Interaction/ design at Indiana University Bloomington. I am targeting positions like Product Designer/ Strategic designer/ Ux Designer/ UX researcher. I have been applying to summer internships but have not been hearing back for interviews.
I was an architect in my past work life so I have a good handle on systems thinking, design and problem solving, research and critical thinking.

Elliot’s Answer

Its not something you "break into" really. You find work in this area through good education (which you are getting) persistent focused job search, which it looks like you are targeting. So keep trying. Currently, you should know it is a VERY challenging job market now and probably no different for internships. Hiring is very tight in this area now. Keep googling, keep applying and polish up your portfolio so it looks as good as possible.

Sneha’s Answer

Hey Sumedha! You’re already on the right track, your background in architecture gives you a strong edge in spatial thinking, design strategy, and user-centered problem solving, all of which are incredibly valuable in UX. Keep refining your portfolio to clearly show how your HCI projects and architectural experience translate into impactful digital solutions. Don’t be discouraged by slow responses, breaking into a new industry takes persistence, and sometimes the right opportunity just needs a little more time or the right connection. Reach out to alumni, attend design meetups, and consider informational interviews to build relationships that open doors. You’ve already reinvented yourself once, now it’s just about getting the right eyes on your story. Good luck!
