I would say, the most challenging part and crucial part: a solid screenplay written by yourself.

I believe, this is the foundation of your film project. It takes time, and it's worth it. Don't rush. It may take months to create and polish a great story.
I strongly recommend having an instructor guiding you through the writing process from inception to completion.

If the film project is a "tree", the screenplay is the "root".

Good luck!

Hello, Kaitlyn !

It's great to know that you are in your first year of Film School or University as a Film Major. Glad you're fascinated by the idea, but it is something that you may be working on in your Senior year. Although I have the degree in theatre, I think I can shed some light on student capstone films. It would be nice if some former film students would share their experiences about their capstone film, but you won't have the challenges they had, it will be different because film careers are unique to the person.

First, who says that you will even have challenges for your capstone project ? This project is a film that you will make that shows your expertise in the aspect of film that you've studied for three years. You'll be great at it. You're just beginning right now, so rest assured, by the time the capstone project comes about, you'll know just what to do.

Each college or film school does their capstone film project a different way so you will need to ask one of your professors how your school does it. Some schools have a senior film showcase for an audience. Some schools display the films at events or online platforms. Some hold a Senior Showcase Night on campus shown to an audience. And some capstone films are even submitted to film festivals, so yes, it's a lot to be fascinated with.

Just stay active in film, strive to understand the aspect of film you are pursuing and enjoy all of your projects. By the time your capstone project is assigned to you, you'll know just what to do !

I hope this helps and I wish you all the best ! Have fun every step of the way !
