WHAT SHOULD I DO NEXT? Major and Job

Hello. I'm sorry this is going to be long. I am doing BA in Humanities (2nd year). I need to choose a major for my 3rd year. I love reading stories. So English is an option for me. However, I have also grown a liking for Sociology. I wanted to work in a publishing house. But I have no experience or any such thing and somehow I cannot bag an internship too. I don't want to do Masters next. I want to get a job and help my family out since we are somewhat economically constrained right now. For that, I am willing to learn new things. Just so that I could land a job and help my family out. Could someone please help me choose a major and let me know what you all think my next step should be?

p.s: i have seen many data analysts and digital marketer online earning good money. is it really possible? would i be able to land a job with that?

Choose English as your major since you love stories and it aligns with your interest in publishing. Meanwhile, learn digital skills like content writing, editing, or social media marketing through free/low-cost online courses (e.g., Coursera, Skillshare, Google). Look for remote freelance work (writing, editing, content creation) to gain experience. Join LinkedIn, apply for entry-level roles in media, content, or publishing, and stay open to related roles like copywriting or content marketing. Focus on earning and learning together.

Take it from someone who decided to major in English when he was in college. I would go for the English degree. Having the ability to write and communicate effectively, can lead you to landing some major jobs. For me, it served me well to help land my job as a technical writer with over 25 years of experience. I worked in various fields to include aerospace, power generation, arts and entertainment, fintech and IT just to name a few. Feel free to checkout my profile on LinkedIn: https://www.linkedin.com/in/john-kunney-jr-26001433/ Data science is one field that would be open to you with this major along with so many others. There's also Proposal Writer, Grant Writer, Speechwriter, Marketing Specialist, and even Research Assistant. Just majoring in English will leave you open to so many options you can pursue after you graduate.

This is unfortunately the kind of question that is difficult for strangers on the internet to answer, but trying to put myself in your shoes, I'd think about choosing either English or Sociology and adding a second major in something more career-oriented that might align somewhat with your interests and the writing skills you've hopefully developed. Some options might include journalism, communications, business, marketing, finance. Internships you could think about pursuing might include PR, communications, copywriting, technical writing, and more. You also mentioned data analyst - your school may offer majors or pathways related to that if you want to explore that more.

Hello! Great question! I don’t think we should decide the major for you, but I am happy to share some insights. English/Sociology is a good major to have as it will help you learn how to write and communicate effectively. If you can, I will do either Business or another major in STEM to get your credentials to the next level. In the meantime, networking with people will help you understand different roles upon your graduation. Good luck!
