What career choice is really best for me if I graduate with an Accounting degree?

I'm going to Michigan College as a freshman in Spring 2026. I'm going for accounting but don't know what career I want specifically. I love math so I chose accounting because I saw it fits me. Everyone says the same thing to me but never explains why. When I look up the jobs they describe almost the same thing. If they're so similar which is the best for me? I love figuring out problems related to math and double checking them. I'm great at time management and very organized.

Hi! I am not an accountant, but work at one of the Big 4 accounting firms. I would suggest applying for an internship with one of the big 4 in the next couple of years. This way you could learn more about a career here. These firms are great for resume building, learning on the job, and growing in your career. Also the compensation is competive and the benefits are good. The cons are that there can be long hours of work in busy season, but if you enjoy solving problems and working with numbers, this may be worth it for you. Lastly, a big 4 firm always looks good on your resume in case you decide to pursue a career in industry or really anywhere after working with one of the firms.

It depends on what makes you happy and what matters most to you. When you're interviewing, take your time to understand the company's culture. Find out what the company values and how it treats its employees. Since work takes up a lot of your time, it's important to be around people who bring out your best and whom you enjoy being with every day. While the tasks might be similar, the people and the culture are what truly make a difference.
