How could I get into a forensics role with police departments after college?
How could I get into a forensics role with police departments after college? Coming from a data analytics background, I would like to pursue investigative forensics to assist police cases. Is this possible through school or is police academy required before any type of forensics position?

I can only answer this question based on my geographic area, as it may vary from county to county, state to state.
We have Crime Analysis Centers in the western New York area. These centers provide forensic assistance in cyber crimes, electronics analysis, digital forensics, etc. Although many police departments have the ability to conduct these types of forensics, many others do not, or do not have the extensive experience often needed for a successful outcome. To attain a position with these centers, a police certification is not necessary. I believe, but am not positive, a bachelors degree is required.
Another option would be persuing a position with a federal law enforcement agency, such as the FBI. These agencies usually have a specialized unit in forensic analysis. To attain a position in federal law enforcement, a minimum of a bachelors degree is required.
