Hello! Honestly, I don’t think there’s a “worst” part about being an accountant. But one challenge — especially if you work independently with individuals or small businesses — is that some people think accounting is just bookkeeping.
Over time, you’ll realize that accounting is much more than recording numbers. It’s about understanding the story behind the numbers and helping businesses make better decisions for the future.
One of the most important things you can do in your career is position yourself as a trusted advisor — someone close to directors, sales leaders, or country managers — not just the person who “closes the books.” That’s when accounting becomes strategic and truly impactful.
Wishing you success and confidence as you begin this new journey!

Every job has its ups and downs. A career in accounting can sometimes call for more hours worked than normal jobs; however, this really depends on what specific job you do in accounting. From my experience as an auditor, the really late nights are contained to busy season (January - February), so it is definitely temporary. That being said, my summers are pretty relaxed and we have a lot of flexibility, so it kinda makes up for the late nights.
