When should I start looking for internships?

This fall I will be going into my freshman year of college. I've heard that I should look into them right away, but I've also heard that as a student-athlete, I ought to focus on the basics for my first year.

It's fantastic that you're planning ahead! Even though I wasn't a student athlete, I started looking for internships in my second year of college. I suggest you begin now. Starting your research early and identifying potential internships is a great step, even if it doesn't guarantee acceptance. It's also crucial to build a strong academic foundation, so keep focusing on your grades during your first year. At the same time, think about what you might want to do over the summer, like internships. You've got this!

Echoing the above, definitely start early when you can (for summer internships). About being a student-athlete, most post graduation jobs nowadays really require fresh-grads to get experience in working (despite being a fresh grad!), and so having an internship would really help you stand out. Of course, quality over quantity too... Make sure your internship actually provides learning experience related to what you're studying. In future job interviews, interviewers will most likely ask about your experience there.
