What is the best way to build connections and network to find jobs in sports marketing?

I am 19 year old college student and I've always wanted to work in sports and am really interested in the marketing side of it. Specifically, I really want to work with the media management part. I want to make sure I am on the right track and am taking the right classes and finding the best internships. #Spring26

Hi Siena, that's a great question! Start by talking to people you know in the field or related areas. If you don't have contacts yet, begin with your teachers and ask them for referrals. Ask these contacts for informational interviews. Ask them the same question you pose here, ask them how they got their job. You can also search online for good questions to ask during these interviews. Always ask if they can recommend someone else to speak with. If you're nervous, practice and informational interview with a teacher or advisor.

Connect with people on LinkedIn. Once connected, explore their network to find anyone at companies you're interested in and reach out to them. You might not always get a reply, and that's okay. Keep trying. Eventually, you'll find someone willing to talk or refer you to others. Don't hesitate to ask for referrals if they don't have time to chat.

You don't have to focus only on people in sports marketing. For instance, someone in general marketing might know someone in sports marketing and can connect you. Respond quickly to messages and use proper grammar, as this is your first impression. Always follow up after conversations and thank them for their time. Good luck!

Hi Siena! As you continue your college journey, focus on taking more media management classes. If you're unsure about your courses, talk to your academic advisor to review your major requirements. In your classes, ask professors about internships that align with your career goals. My favorite professor once guided me on which events to attend and what questions to ask professionals in the field. This helped me understand what I truly enjoy in sports media management. Start by visiting your professors during their office hours. This will help you maintain good communication and provide you with strong references for future interviews. You've got this!
