What is a good next job to take to further improve my music career?

After my first job, I'm hoping to find something that fits with my ideals for music production and playing, but I know jobs like that are scarce and I'm not sure how to move forward with my career.

Thank you comment icon Aiden, I agree with Joy's answer. After you find your first job, you will probably have a good idea of what job you would like to pursue. Sincerely, Doran Doran Heck

Aiden, you’re thinking about this in a smart way because your next job doesn’t necessarily have to be your dream music job to move you closer to your dream. 🎵

I would look for jobs that put you one step closer to the music industry while helping you build transferable skills. Consider opportunities at music stores, recording studios, theaters, event venues, churches, radio stations, concert-production companies, or businesses that handle audio/visual equipment. Even an entry-level position can introduce you to musicians, producers, sound engineers, and other people who may eventually open doors.

🎯 Here’s something else I encourage young people to think about: What part of music do you love so much that it doesn’t feel like work?

Is it performing? Writing? Producing beats? Recording? Mixing sound? Working with equipment? Teaching someone else to play? Organizing performances? Promoting artists?

Those answers matter because “a career in music” can mean dozens of different careers. Your passion may eventually point toward music production, audio engineering, live sound, songwriting, performance, artist management, music education, or even the technology side of the industry.

🧰 And don’t underestimate skills you develop outside of music. Customer service teaches communication. Retail teaches sales. Technology jobs build technical skills. Event work teaches production and organization. Those skills can eventually become part of your career identity in music.

🎧 Keep creating while you work. Build a portfolio of recordings, performances, productions, beats, or other projects that show what you can actually do. Your job can help pay the bills, but your portfolio can show the world where you’re headed.

🚀 The goal isn’t necessarily to find the perfect next job. Find the next job that gives you skills, connections, experience, or resources that move you closer to the music career you want.

To your success!

You have to network on social media and get your name out use YouTube and have a channel. Some venues can help you perform. Do not give up it will take time because it used to be easy to get discovered on social media. Best of luck. Keep putting yourself out there because your brand is unique and that's an advantage.
