What was the process of job searching after college like?

I plan on studying Political Science in college; however, I am unsure on what I should minor in. In the future I would love to work with spanish speaking countries, so I thought maybe a spanish minor would be perfect. I am bilingual, but I believe my grammar skills could improve immensely. On the other hand, I've also heard that sociology is another minor that is extremely helpful in understanding how people act the way they do. Lastly, a minor in international- affairs/relations would be beneficial in the way that I do plan on working internationally eventually.

hey jayla!
your minor is entirely up to you. in your position, i would probably prioritize a minor in international affairs/relations if you know your job would benefit from that in the future.
i am a sociology major, so its pretty versatile in understanding people. however i would focus on something that is relevant to your career; not saying sociology is off the table! its definitely interesting.
im unsure if it would be worth it to get a minor in spanish; i dont know if its necessarily needed to prove you are bilingual. you can simply take courses and relearn the language if you wanna save your minor for something more relevant
i would also look at what universities/colleges you plan on attending. some have minors that aren't available or have something unique to that school only.

some you can look at along with the ones you listed earlier:
people oriented - social justice, public health, sociology/psychology, human rights/peace and conflict studies, pre-law
technical skills - compsci, economics, statistics/data science.

overall, i would say it depends on WHAT you would be doing exactly. if you would be doing statistics, you may want to pick a minor in a technical skill. if you want to work for people, you may want to do prelaw or public health. international affairs would probably be good here, too!

but don't think that you won't get a job if you pick a minor that has nothing to do with you career if you change your mind later. if youre passionate thats already great but i would try to have some volunteer or work experience related to the job youre looking at.

hope this helps you!

While in school you should seek out internships you can participate in each summer or whenever you are available. This will be a great way to build your resume and make industry connections.

Rosemary’s Answer

Hi Kayla! I have yet to finish college, so I’m not really sure what the job-searching process is like after graduation. But I would say your minor is completely up to you. My advice would be to minor in something you think will be the most impactful to your future job. If you want to work in a Spanish-speaking country, I would definitely say Spanish. And if you want to work with groups of people from different backgrounds, I would suggest sociology. Basically, I’d choose whichever one you think will help you the most with what you want to do in the future
