Hi again Jayla!

I am now very curious - why Texas? We are a long way from Kentucky!

In any event - some agencies have their own academies: Dallas Police Dept, San Antonio Police Dept, TX Dept of Public Safety (Highway Patrol); University of Texas, etc. Others use a regional law enforcement academy- their are many counties and small cities around San Antonio that use the AACOG academy (Alamo Area Council of Governments).

There are many different types of police departments: highway patrol, school, university, hospital, game warden, etc. In the rural areas, an officer might be expected to do more of his/her own investigative work: gather fingerprints, test narcotics, interview witnesses. In metropolitan departments, it is more likely that an officer will call a detective to investigate the crime.

As a police officer, you will be required to participate in continued training throughout your career. The academy is just the beginning! These additional training classes are not likely to be as rigorous as the academy.

If you are hired by an agency, they will send you to their academy. It is also sometimes possible to go through an academy and then look for jobs after you graduate. I would recommend that you try to get hired by an agency. This way, you will not have to pay the cost of attending the academy - the agency will pay for your training, AND, pay you while you are in training!
