Jennifer’s Answer

Great question! Agriculture Engineering involves several different types of engineering from electrical, mechanical, software, chemical, industrial, civil, environmental to name a few. I designed a laser system that went on tractors and as the tractor drove down an orchard of apples or oranges it would map the trees an turn fertilizer (chemicals) on just for healthy trees. It would also record the amount and type of chemicals released so the farmer would have a record of chemicals used to go with the product picked. It took a team of engineers to design this system. It is important for farmers to have such automation to reduce and record chemicals used.

There are also solar and wind power generation now being used in agriculture. This is a hot new field. This technology takes you off the grid and also gives the farmer an opportunity to capture energy and sell it back to utility companies. This is critical for our future energy demands.

What an exciting career choice. Agriculture engineering is critical to sustain our environment.

G. Mark’s Answer

One of the impressive achievements of the United States has been its amazingly efficient food production. When some other countries were involving over 80 percent of their population in feeding their people, the US was getting by with less than 5 percent and producing more food than they could eat locally, and therefore exporting it and feeding large portions of the rest of the world. A people cannot achieve much in the way of technology or other progress if they don't have enough food to eat. And the rest of the world can use the help. And beyond theories, in order to do that, the people who specialize in the practical application of the sciences -- the engineers -- are a cornerstone. If you look at the greatest minds in science, you'll usually find that the most awesome were those that actually did things with their discoveries. Without agricultural engineering, the rest of it can't flourish. You can be part of that. Besides that, some of the coolest, hottest technologies are coming into their own and are being applied to agricultural engineering -- Artificial Intelligence, Big Data, and Internet of Things. Plus, you get to go outside and make stuff grow. Neat, huh?

Shawn’s Answer

Without agricultural engineering the world would have a significantly more difficult time feeding the populace. Agricultural engineering is focused on all engineering aspects applied directly to agriculture; I.e water supply, drainage, planting and harvesting equipment, ....
