How competitive are jobs in computer science?

One of my younger siblings really wants to go into computer science in college, but he's really doesn't like the competition that he's heard about. He felt like so many of his friends wanted to do the same thing. How hard was it to get your job in computer science? Does the competition depend on the job? What jobs within computer science are the most and least competitive to land? #computer-science #technology #software-engineering

There will be plenty of opportunities for someone who is good. So tell him not to worry about the competition and instead focus on his own skills and expertise.

Neil’s Answer

Hi Anina,

There is a shortage of computer/software engineers in the United States and will continue to be a shortage for many years in the future. While there is competition in every career choice, there is a lot of opportunity for anyone who has reasonable or better skills in computer science. If your brother wants to advance to the highest levels in his career in computer science, he will encounter some competition. He should not worry about computer science being too competitive.

Scott’s Answer

The advice from David above is exactly right. However, your brother should also try to determine if this field is something he would really enjoy doing. For me it is the creative nature of the work that I love. I love the problem solving. I love the detail oriented nature of software development. If he is really passionate about computer science and software development, he should focus on learning the right ways to do this work. That is how he will get noticed over time and the competition aspect will not be an issue.
