Matthew’s Answer

Finance is a great gateway to learn about many things in life. As an accountant, I've had the opportunity to work with companies and executives in the technology, life sciences and consumer products fields and while working with these organizations, have learned about their products and services. I've learned about mapping the human genome, how cloud computing works, blockchain and a whole host of other topics. Finance is a great gateway because all organizations need strong financial team members to help them achieve the goals, whether it is a large multinational organization or a local non-profit.

Finance is a great focus area of study! All companies hire for some sort of Finance/ Accounting role. If you're passionate about this work, you'll be able to find a job in many industries. You could work in healthcare, technology, public education, etc. I would just ensure that you're passionate about the day-to-day, as you'll most likely work many hours.

I believe there is a saying that goes something like this, "english is the language of the world, and financial accounting is the language of business". Knowing that language will give you a leg up in the business world. The reality is nobody working in business can afford financial illiteracy. As others pointed out, there are many many advantages majoring in finance, I really hope you will pursue this path.

Julie’s Answer

I was a Finance major and highly recommend it. A lot of people might refer you to accounting, but with a Finance degree, you won't be pigeon-holed into an accounting job (like the Big Four). A lot of accounting majors end up switching into the Finance world, so you might as well get ahead from the start. I personally was a part of FLDP (Finance Leadership Development Program) and HIGHLY recommend it. Many large corporations have these programs where you rotate job positions within the company every six months for two years to gain exposure around the business. (Some companies might have three one-year rotations). This allowed me to really examine what I wanted to do with my career, learned likes and dislikes and ultimately where I wanted to end up given the dozens to hundreds of Finance roles there are out there. Finance will give you versatile skills that will make you extremely marketable. Good luck!
