Estelle’s Answer

To my knowledge, most pregnancy terminations are performed by gynecologists. The procedure is similar to the surgical procedure that some women need when they are having a miscarriage.

Dan’s Answer

OB/GYN and rural family medicine -- vast majority will be OB/GYN though. Even during emergencies, general surgeons will usually recruit gynecologist for any OB/GYN issues as they are the experts in female health.

Samantha’s Answer

In my experience working in this field, it depends on the state you live in if a doctor (MD or DO) has to perform an abortion or if advanced practice nurses can perform them. Nurse Practitioners (WHNP, CNP, FNP), APRNs, or certified nurse midwives can also perform medication and in clinic procedures in some states! And even if you are a doctor, the specialty does not have to be in Obstetrics/GYN. Many family medicine docs can be trained in abortion care.

Madison’s Answer

OBGYN's provide abortion care but you can also provide this as a PA, APRN, family medicine physician, internal med physician. You can also be in other fields and train in abortion care at places like planned parenthood and do work there outside of your regular job. There are specific fellowships (typically after OBGYN residency) for more sub-specialty family planning/abortion care advocacy/clinical training, though there is a standardized expectation for how much knowledge/skills every single OBGYN resident has in family planning/abortion care and they need to be able to do that in order to graduate.

Hope this helps!
